What should a "Save the date" card look like?

I want to do a black text on heavy weight paper, so I can print them myself to save money. I was then going to splash each one with bright water colors (the colors of our wedding). I am quite creative and crafty and love making things by hand.But now I am second guessing it. Should I have a photo of us on the front? The location (beautiful mountains) or is that unnecessary. I don't want to spend $$$ on something that is going to end of in the trash a few days or weeks later.
