Missing gift envelopes. How do we handle this situation?

We were just married this past weekend (woo!) with a wonderful ceremony and reception. It was a bummer to find out tonight opening gifts that we're missing about 10 envelopes from people we know gave us one or strongly suspect would give us one. I already emailed the venue to see if they're around anywhere. We don't suspect theft. If they're not at the venue anywhere, we're not sure how to go about this situation. I feel it'd be tacky to ask the people who have potentially had their gifts lost if they did indeed give us a gift. They also possibly just forgot or simply didn't want to give us a gift, which is fine by us, but we want to thank everyone properly in our thank you cards. We'd feel rude if we only wrote "thanks for coming" and not "thanks for coming and giving us your generous gift" if they did indeed give us money as a gift. What's the proper etiquette here? Any help is much appreciated! via /r/wedding http://ift.tt/2sOaUfv
