PSA for name changing at social security office. It's easy but be prepared to declare what you want without the help of paperwork.

First of all, it's super easy. It only took me about 30 minutes in one door and out the other, though YMMV. I took a ticket, got called up, gave her my marriage certificate and driver's license, answered her questions, and was on my way! Word of warning: make sure you are prepared with exactly how you want your name changed because they may not actually ask you any specifics and you may have to interject. What happened to me:I knew I would take my husband's last name but I kept going back and forth on how and if I was going to keep my maiden name involved at all. Eventually I decided on First Middle Maiden Last. I figured they would have me fill out a form when I got there and I would be able to spell it out. Well, there was no paperwork! She just said "so you are taking (husband's last name) as your last name?" I said yes. She did some computer magic and sent me on my way. While she was magicking, I thought about mentioning how I waned my maiden name to be a second middle name but I didn't because I wasn't even totally sure if that's the way to say it (second middle name? is there another term for this?) and I was nervous about being there to begin with. So I just let it go. I personally don't really care too much. As I said, I clearly didn't have my heart set on anything to begin with, but I know a lot of you do, so just be careful, know what you want, and be prepared to speak your wished verbally. via /r/weddingplanning http://ift.tt/2sIT2mc
